Fans will soon be able to follow along with all the Formula E in-race action using virtual reality.

Formula E made the announcement earlier in the week that it had partnered with Virtually Live, a virtual reality technology company based out of San Francisco.

During the past few races, the two companies have been testing live virtual reality broadcasts so that fans in the future will be able to follow along with the races using virtual reality.

Fans with a virtual reality system will seemingly be able to ride along onboard their favorite drivers and get a 360-degree view of all the action surrounding them. They would also be able to switch between drivers during the race.

At next Saturday’s Long Beach ePrix, Formula E and Virtually Live will be showcasing the new experience through a series of events and, following the trial at Long Beach, the experience will be available for download in the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive App stores.

“As an innovative championship, we’re excited to partner with Virtually Live,” said Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag. “Virtual reality is one of the most exciting new ways to broadcast live sports and improve fans’ viewing experiences. Now, we can give fans that cannot attend a race in person the opportunity of feeling like they are actually immersed in the Formula E experience from any perspective.”

“We are very excited about the partnership and believe that we are an ideal match,” said Virtually Live CEO Tom Impallomeni. “Both Formula E and Virtually Live have a clear mission: we are pushing innovation and technological boundaries. Formula E aims to represent a vision for the future of the motor industry, serving as a framework for R&D around the electric vehicle, while Virtually Live is building a revolutionary, immersive virtual reality technology allowing everyone to experience the magic of live sports and events from anywhere in the world.”

Coverage of the Long Beach ePrix begins at 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday, April 2 on FS1 and streaming live on FOX Sports GO.
