Speculation about the condition of Michael Schumacher has ramped up after comments today from former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo.

Montezemolo was on stage at a media event in Italy when he was asked about Schumacher, who drove for Ferrari from 1996 to 2006.

"I have unfortunately not good news," Montezemolo said. "Michael was a great driver, and we experienced a long time together in both our personal and professional lives. But life is really strange.

"He was the most successful driver of Ferrari and in his career he had only one accident, in 1999. But unfortunately a fall in a ski accident has had serious consequences."

Some media outlets have interpreted his comments as suggestion that Schumacher's condition has taken a turn for the worse -- a widely circulated Reuters translation has made his statement sound more dramatic than this version supplied by Italian sources -- but the alternative view is simply that the German's state is not improving.
