F1: Alonso focused on beating Williams, puts 'difficult tracks' behind him
Fernando Alonso says that Ferrari hasn't given up on 2014, despite the team's focus inevitably turning to preparations for next season.
Ferrari is battling with Williams for third place in the championship, so there is much to be gained or lost.
“We just need to keep working hard, and whatever is the performance of the car, whatever is our advantage or disadvantage with Williams, we will fight until the last lap of the last race,” he said. “There are a lot of points on the table, there is Abu Dhabi with double points, there are many opportunities that we will have to close that gap.
“Spa and Monza were difficult tracks for us, we knew that. Williams managed to maximize those points and they did a good job, and now we arrive at some circuits that will be a little bit in favor of the Ferrari characteristics, and what we have to do is what they did in Monza, try to maximize those opportunities.”
Regarding the high fuel consumption in Singapore, he said: “Fuel is going to be tight here, it's one of the circuits where we have to save a little bit extra. But it should be manageable. We have a race track, a layout, that allows you to save fuel in an easier way with little possibilities to overtake. In case of having to save fuel it should be one of the easiest places from that point of view, because you're safe from overtaking.”
Meanwhile, Alonso scoffed at rumors that emerged in the Italian media suggesting that he would swap seats with Sebastian Vettel. He implied that such stories didn't help the team.
“Nothing really to add, I've been commenting about my future for 13 months, since [last] August, I've got nothing new to say. Sometimes it's sad when it comes from Italy, they create for some strange purpose these rumors, which are not helping Ferrari, which is what we are all here for.”
