De Silvestro becomes first female driver to score points in Formula E
In her eighth attempt, Simona de Silvestro finally scored points in a Formula E race on Saturday.
In doing so, the 27-year-old Swiss racing driver became the first female driver to score points in the newly-formed FIA Formula E Series.
"I'm pretty happy to get my first points in Formula E," said de Silvestro. "We've been so close so many times and we've never got them. So it's a great step forward. The weekend was good, pretty happy to have it happen in Long Beach too because most of my racing has happened here in the U.S. so it feels like home. You always want to do well in front of your home crowd."
The top 10 drivers get awarded points in Formula E. De Silvestro placed ninth on Saturday racing for Andretti. De Silvestro had scored two 11th-place finishes, one 12th, one 13th and two 14ths beforehand. She had also logged one retirement.
De Silvestro is the third female driver to race in the sport’s two-year history, with both Katherine Legge and Michela Cerruti having raced before her. Legge’s best finish had been 15th while Cerruti’s had been 12th.
Lucas di Grassi won Saturday’s event and, in doing so, took the points lead.
