CoTA hosts first official Beer Mile race: 'Please do not vomit on the track'
The Beer Mile World Championship was moved to the Circuit of the Americas this week, after concerns were expressed over holding the event at Austin’s Yellow Jacket Stadium.
Corey Gallagher, 27, fell four seconds short of the world record on Wednesday with a time of 5:00.23. Elizabeth Herndon won the women’s race in 6:17.76.
Although many beer miles have been held in the past, this was the first official Beer Mile World Championship race.
The race is simply a one-mile run on a quarter-mile track, where each competitor has to stop at the end of each lap and chug 12 ounces of beer.
In the end, that means each competitor has to chug four beers before running four laps (one beer per lap). Vomiting is against the rules, and causes you to have to run an extra lap.
Unfortunately, things got a bit out of hand on Wednesday. “Please do not vomit on the track,” came the announcement over the circuit’s PA system, according to MensJournal.com.
With all the twists and turns that this 3.4-mile state-of-the-art facility in Austin has, it is an announcement we wouldn’t be surprised to hear on a few track days too.
