Abuse of track limits will lead to drive-through penalties in F1 race
The FIA has confirmed that drivers could receive a drive-through penalty for abuse of track limits in Sunday’s Hungarian GP.
As previously reported for this race, the FIA has installed detection systems in the run-off areas at Turns 4 and 11 and, following a successful trial on Friday, the potential penalties have now been formally confirmed.
A note from race director Charlie Whiting said “any driver who is judged to have left the track three times at these corners (when counted cumulatively) will be shown a black and white flag, one further crossing will result in a report being made to the stewards for not having made every reasonable effort to use the track. As discussed, this is likely to result in a drive through penalty.”
Whiting added that in some circumstances, for example if a driver was forced off track, the incident would not count.
Meanwhile, as expected there is a zero tolerance approach in qualifying, with lap times to be deleted.
