Philadelphia Union 3, Houston Dynamo 1
Freddy Adu scored twice and the Philadelphia Union beat the Houston Dynamo 3-1 on Sunday to snap an eight-game winless streak and avoid dropping out of playoff contention.
Adu opened the scoring in the 28th minute, and gave Philadelphia (8-14-6) a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick in the 50th. Josue Martinez added his first MLS goal, connecting in the 70th minute.
Boniek Garcia scored for Houston (12-8-10) in the 44th minute.
D.C. United 1, Chivas USA 0
Branko Boskovic's first goal of the season lifted D.C. United to a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA on Sunday night.
Lionard Pajoy's cross set up Boskovic's header, and United (15-10-5) earned their third straight win and extended the club's record home unbeaten streak to 15 games.
United moved into a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference, but the New York Red Bulls still hold the first tiebreaker of total goals scored.
Chivas (7-15-7), last in the Western Conference, lost its season-high fifth consecutive game.
D.C.'s best chances came late in the first half when Shalrie Joseph's deflected shot rolled wide of Bill Hamid's left post, before Hamid caught Nick LaBrocca's lofted effort after a goalmouth flurry.
United, which dominated early, regained control after halftime and took the lead when Pajoy and Boskovic connected. Pajoy got the ball on the right and curled a cross in toward the near corner of the 6-yard box.
Boskovic, a substitute, made a darting run from near the penalty spot toward the ball, dove in front of a defender and redirected his header inside the left post and beyond Dan Kennedy.
Boskovic, who also has five assists in 22 appearances - including 11 as a sub - signed with D.C. as a designated player in June 2010 before re-signing a less expensive contract this June.
The midfielder could play an expanded role down the stretch with the season-ending injury to captain Dwayne De Rosario sustained earlier this month.
Vancouver Whitecaps 2, Colorado Rapids 2
Jamie Smith, a second-half substitute, scored in the 86th minute to lift the Colorado Rapids into a 2-2 tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday.
Smith put in a shot from just inside the 18-yard box after the ball bounced a couple of times off the feet of Vancouver's Alain Rochat and Young-Pyo Lee.
Colorado (9-18-3) avoided a 10th straight road loss that would have extended a club record.
The Whitecaps (10-12-8) are winless in six games but they moved two points ahead of idle Dallas in the race for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Rapids improved their playoff hopes slightly, moving within six points of Dallas and staying eight back of Vancouver.
Omar Cummings also scored for the Rapids. Rochat and second-half substitute Kenny Miller had goals for the Whitecaps, who overcame a 1-0, first-half deficit.
The Whitecaps controlled much of the play but were robbed frequently by goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
In an attempt to generate more offense, Vancouver coach Martin Rennie put Alain Rochat, usually a defender, in midfield for the second straight game.
Vancouver goalkeeper Brad Knighton had little to do in the first 34 minutes as the Caps kept the ball in the Colorado end most of the time. But the Rapids capitalized on a quick counterattack in the 35th as Cummings put in a rebound after Martin Rivero's rolling shot hit the left post and the ball caromed to him on the right flank.
Rochat got Vancouver even in the 64th minute as he flicked in Gershon Koffie's shot off a long Camilo corner kick.
Miller gave Vancouver the lead about when he ran to a through ball from Robson and, from just inside the 18-yard box, put in a shot off Pickens' hand.
Colorado then tied it late. After Knighton caught a Conor Casey header, Smith got a couple of fortuitous bounces and scored.
Montreal Impact 0, Sporting KC 0
Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen punched away Matteo Ferrari's header in added time as Montreal struggled to a 0-0 draw Saturday to keep the Impact in the MLS playoff hunt.
Montreal picked up its first point in three games since ending its team-record five-game winning streak. Sporting KC, which leads the East with 56 points, is 8-4-3 on the road this season.
''This was a massive point for us, for sure,'' Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said. ''A huge opportunity for us to not necessarily separate ourselves immensely, but every one of those points adds up at the end of the season.''
The Impact claimed their 40th point with the draw, which kept them unbeaten in their last seven at home. Montreal, which is seventh in the Eastern Conference, had won its six previous home games since a 3-1 loss to Sporting KC on July 4.
''At the end of the day, until somebody tells me that we're mathematically out of it, we're still in it,'' Impact captain Davy Arnaud said. ''The only thing we can now go do is win our next three games and hope that it's enough. We know it's going to be difficult because teams already have close to the points that we can possibly get, but until we're out of it we're going to keep on pushing.''
New England Revolution 1, New York Red Bulls 1
Darrius Barnes scored his first career goal five minutes into stoppage time to give the New England Revolution a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
The Revolution (7-15-8) have just one win in 13 matches (1-8-4) since beating New York 2-0 on July 8.
Barnes' tying goal came shortly after Loel Lindpere put the Red Bulls (14-8-8) ahead in the first minute of stoppage time.
Chicago Fire 2, Columbus Crew 1
Chris Rolfe scored two goals in a little more than 3 minutes in the first half to lead the Chicago Fire to a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.
Chicago (16-8-5) won its fourth straight and seventh in the last eight to move two points behind first-place Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference.
Jairo Arrieta took advantage of a miscue by Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson to score in the 15th minute for Columbus (13-11-6). Johnson took a drop pass from a defender and kicked it directly to Arrieta, who took three quick steps to his left and fired a hard shot that scrambling defender Andy Friedrich had no chance to stop.
Rolfe then scored twice in a span of 3:16, tying the score in the 23rd minute with a ground-hugging, left footed drive from 16 feet out. He put the Fire ahead with the game's last goal, a 15-yard that went over goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum high into the left corner of the net.
Real Salt Lake 2, Portland Timbers 1
Javier Morales and Fabian Espindola stepped up in Alvaro Saborio's absence.
Morales and Espindola both scored in the first half to lead Salt Lake to a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.
''We got big time plays from a couple of big time players there on the attacking end,'' RSL coach Jason Kreis said.
Saborio, second in the MLS with 14 goals, missed the game due a shoulder injury suffered against Tauro FC earlier in the week. He is expected to be sidelined at least two to four weeks.
Real Salt Lake (15-11-4) became the second club in MLS history to get at least 15 wins in three straight seasons and secured a spot in the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
Bright Dike scored in the 61st minute for the Timbers (7-15-8), who remained winless on the road. Portland only has two more chances - with games remaining against Seattle and Vancouver - to end the futility.
''The reality of it is we don't want to be one of those teams that goes down in the record book without a win on the road during the course of a year,'' Portland midfielder Jack Jewsbury said.
LA Galaxy 4, Toronto FC 2
Juninho had two spectacular first-half goals and Robbie Keane also scored twice Saturday night as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Toronto FC 4-2 to clinched a playoff spot.
The Galaxy (15-11-4) won its fourth consecutive match, though its shutout streak ended at five matches - including two in CONCACAF Champions League play.
Terry Dunfield and Luis Silva scored for Toronto (5-18-7), which lost for just the third time in 12 games.
Juninho, taking set pieces with David Beckham sidelined by a sprained ankle, curled a free kick from just outside the box toward the upper-right corner in the 11th minute, then struck a 32-yard rocket to the upper-left corner in the 33rd.
Keane finished a sequence to give Los Angeles a three-goal lead three minutes later. Keane added another, his 13th of the season, deep into second-half stoppage.
Seattle Sounders 1, San Jose Earthquakes 2
A prolific scorer, Chris Wondolowski takes more pride in goals that are game-winners.
Wondolowski got his MLS-leading 22nd goal, and his league-record 10th game-winner, to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-1 victory against the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night.
The tiebreaking score came in the 30th minute as Wondolowski converted a corner kick that was settled by Victor Bernardez, who passed it into the 6-yard box for Wondolowski's easy tap-in past goalkeeper Michael Gspurning.
The game-winner broke the league record that Wondolowski shared with Carolos Ruiz of Los Angeles. Wondolowski previously had nine in 2010, matching the mark Ruiz set in 2002.
''I appreciate a lot of their assists - they put it on platters for me,'' Wondolowski said. ''A lot of them are team goals, but I take pride in scoring goals that are game-winners, because those mean a lot.''
No other player in the league has more than 14 goals.
Steve Zakuani tied the score for the Sounders (13-7-9) in the 14th minute with his first goal since returning to action in early July after a year-long recovery from a broken leg.
Simon Dawkins scored his eighth goal of the season in the 2nd minute for the Earthquakes (18-6-6), who won all three matchups against Seattle this season, including two on the road.
