Martin Rennie will coach the fledgling Vancouver Whitecaps in 2012.

The team announced Tuesday that Rennie, the coach of the Carolina RailHawks of the North American Soccer League, will take over next season.

The Whitecaps fired coach Teitur Thordarson on May 30 and replaced him with director of soccer operations Tom Soehn on an interim basis.

Vancouver defeated the Chicago Fire 4-2 last weekend, but the team is last in the Western Conference with a 3-11-9 record. The 36-year-old Rennie has the RailHawks in first place this season with a 14-3-2 record.
