Paul Barber is stepping down as chief executive officer of the Vancouver Whitecaps.

No explanation was given in the MLS club's news release, which said Barber's resignation is effective Feb. 29.

''I am delighted and honored to have served one of North America's oldest and most famous soccer clubs and to have played a part in re-establishing the Whitecaps at the highest level of the game on this continent,'' Barber said in the statement Friday.

The team said chief operating officer Rachel Lewis and president Bob Lenarduzzi will assume additional responsibilities. Barber, 44, joined the Whitecaps from England's Tottenham Hotspur in February 2010.
