It's probably more notable who won't be playing for Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC this weekend than who will be on the field.
These short-handed squads have plenty of players missing as they try to end winless streaks Saturday night in Utah.
Real Salt Lake (6-3-5) lost playmaking midfielder Javier Morales to a broken ankle May 7, and suffered another critical loss in Wednesday's scoreless draw at Chicago. Fabian Espindola, who has a team-high four goals, exited in the seventh minute with a hamstring injury.
"That is literally our fourth or fifth forward now that's been ruled unavailable through one circumstance or another through national call-ups, injuries, suspension, so it's uncanny," coach Jason Kreis said. "I don't remember ever a time being in such dire straits to solve who to play as forward."
Kreis already was without forward Alvaro Saborio and midfielder Arturo Alvarez, who did not make the trip after returning from international duty in the Gold Cup. Forward Paulo Jr. is out with a hamstring injury.
Espindola, Morales and Paulo Jr. have combined for seven of the 15 goals for Real Salt Lake, which has posted three straight draws to run its winless streak to four.
"That's three games without a loss," Kreis said. "We don't have any forwards, so I think that's OK."
Toronto FC (2-6-9) is 0-3-5 in its last eight, and one-third of its team is unavailable this weekend. That includes defender Nana Attakora as well as midfielders Jacob Peterson, Tony Tchani and Gianluca Zavarise.
Defender Dicoy Williams and midfielder Julian de Guzman could be back after returning from the Gold Cup.
"It's always nice if you have enough choices if everyone is fit," coach Aron Winter said. "Now the team has dealt with it before. We're going to use a lot of young guys."
Winter's team owns a league-worst goal differential of minus-11.
Toronto is 0-3-4 on the road this year and has a lack of success at Rio Tinto Stadium, losing twice in MLS play and once in the CONCACAF Champions League.
RSL is 4-1-2 at home.
"They're a good side, especially at home, it's always been tough for us going into Rio Tinto," TFC goalkeeper Stefan Frei said. "So I am sure they're going to bring their 'A' game, so we need to have a good performance all-around to get something out of that game."
Toronto drew road matches at MLS-leading Los Angeles and New England before losing 1-0 to Seattle at home last Saturday despite playing with a man advantage after the 49th minute.
"You don't really know what to expect with Toronto," RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman said. "They get a tie in Los Angeles and then they seem to lose at home so it's sort of a Jekyll-and-Hyde type team. They are a team trying to find themselves."
The RSL lineup got a boost Wednesday with Will Johnson making his first start in five matches after missing the first three in that stretch due to the Gold Cup.
"Will is an important player for us," Kreis said. "The ground he covers and the energy he brings to the game for us is hugely important."
