New York Red Bulls 2, Toronto 0
Thierry Henry scored in the first half and Fabian Espindola added a goal on a wild play with 10 minutes left, leading the New York Red Bulls to a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday night.
The Red Bulls (14-9-6) took over sole possession of first place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. New York, which has five games remaining, began the day tied with both Montreal and Sporting Kansas City, but the Impact lost to Columbus and Sporting was off.
Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke was pleased with the outcome.
''I don't think it was pretty,'' Petke said. ''But at the end of the day, we'll take the points. You can see the overall attitude of this team has changed, the willingness to jump on board. Especially Thierry. It's great to see him score goals two weeks in a row. That's phenomenal.''
Henry also scored in the Red Bulls' 4-1 win in Houston last weekend.
Toronto (4-14-11) was eliminated from playoff contention.
Philadelphia Union 0, Houston Dynamo 1
Ricardo Clark scored in the 53rd minute to lift the Houston Dynamo to a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night.
The Dynamo (11-10-7) snapped a four-game winless streak and moved past Union (10-10-9) in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
''It was huge for us,'' said Houston's Brad Davis, who got his team-leading seventh assist on the score. ''Things haven't been going the way we've wanted them to lately. It may not have been pretty, but everyone put everything they had into this game tonight. It's important for us to get three points and jump up in the standings.''
Seattle Sounders 2, Real Salt Lake 0
Not long ago, the Seattle Sounders found themselves needing to pick up as many points possible just to get back into playoff positioning.
Very quickly, the Sounders made up the ground and find themselves as the points leaders in Major League Soccer.
''We've kept climbing, kept climbing and now we're in first place. Now we've got to make sure we stay there and enjoy the view a little bit,'' Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said.
Obafemi Martins scored just three minutes into the match to give Seattle an early lead, Lamar Neagle added a second goal in the 38th minute, and the Sounders took over the MLS points lead with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Friday night.
The Sounders (15-8-4) vaulted past Salt Lake in the Western Conference standings and now sit atop the entire league with 49 points after their fifth straight victory. The Sounders are one-point ahead of RSL (14-9-6) and four ahead of the Eastern Conference trio of Montreal, New York and Sporting Kansas City with about six weeks remaining in the regular season. Seattle has also played two fewer games than Salt Lake.
DC United 2, LA Galaxy 2
Substitute Kyle Porter scored in the 84th minute to help D.C. United to a 2-2 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday afternoon.
Porter's goal came three minutes after Michael Stephens scored for the first time in three seasons to put Los Angeles in front.
Robbie Keane also scored his team-leading 13th goal early for Los Angeles (13-10-5) and added his team-leading 11th assist on Stephens' effort, while Chris Pontius tied it for United with a late first-half goal in his first start since July.
Porter's header gave league-worst United just its second point in six matches. However, D.C. (3-19-6) now has a win and two draws in its last three home contests.
Montreal Impact 1, Columbus Crew 2
Chad Marshall and Dominic Oduro scored in the second half to lead the Columbus Crew to a 2-1 comeback victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday.
The Crew (10-14-5) ended a four-game unbeaten run for Montreal (13-7-6), which lost at home for only the second time this season. Columbus went 2-0-1 against Montreal this season.
Marco Di Vaio, the MLS scoring leader with 18 goals, got his seventh in five games in the 23rd minute for Montreal. Di Vaio had another good chance but was stopped from in close early in the second half.
Federico Higuain's free kick to the left of the area was headed in by Marshall in the 66th, and Oduro remained onside to receive a pass and put the ball past Troy Perkins in the 79th.
Chicago Fire 3, New England Revolution 2
Alex scored the tiebreaking goal in the 86th minute, Sean Johnson made four saves, and the Chicago Fire beat the New England Revolution 3-2 on Saturday night.
Three minutes after entering the game, Alex corralled a clearing pass and knocked a left-footed low shot off Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from 24 yards out for his first goal of the season.
Juan Luis Anangono and Mike Magee also scored for Chicago (11-11-6), which pulled into a tie with Philadelphia for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points - two points ahead of seventh-place New England.
Kelyn Rowe and Sare Sene twice gave the Revolution (10-11-7) leads, but the Fire tied the score both times - the last on Magee's goal in the 55th.
Colorado Rapids 2, FC Dallas 1
Vicente Sanchez is quickly making a good impression with his new club.
Sanchez scored a goal and knocked another in off an opposing player and the Colorado Rapids rallied for a 2-1 win over FC Dallas on a rainy Saturday night.
David Ferreira scored for Dallas (10-8-10), which was dealt a blow in its late-season playoff push by an unfortunate bounce.
Sanchez was playing just his fifth game with the Rapids, where he joined the team after playing in his homeland, Uruguay. He had two assists before Saturday and finally got his first goal with the Rapids.
Chivas USA 1, Portland Timbers 1
Diego Valeri scored in the 50th minute to lift the Portland Timbers to a 1-1 draw against Chivas USA on Saturday night.
Jose Valencia held the ball inside the area and squared a pass to Valeri, who sent a shot past Chivas goalie Dan Kennedy for his seventh goal of the season. Portland (10-5-13) remained winless in its last eight road matches.
Bryan de la Fuente scored in the 23rd minute for Chivas USA (6-15-8). Carlos Borja sent a cross in from the left side to the middle of the penalty area, where De La Fuente powered a header past Donovan Ricketts.
Chivas scored the first goal for the 10th time in its last 12 games matches, but are just 3-5-4 in that span.
San Jose Earthquakes 0, Vancouver Whitecaps 0
The San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps played to a 0-0 draw Saturday night, damaging both teams' hopes of getting back into the Western Conference playoff picture.
The clubs remain tied for seventh place in the West with 38 points each, five behind fifth-place Portland, which currently holds the conference's final postseason berth.
San Jose extended its home unbeaten streak to 14 matches, but the Earthquakes (10-11-8) snapped six-game home winning streak.
Vancouver (10-10-8) continued its recent slide, dropping to 1-5-3 in its last nine matches despite the return of captain Jay DeMerit. DeMerit, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon 8 minutes into Vancouver's season opener, capped a 6 1/2-month recovery from the injury by replacing injured center back Brad Rusin in the 31st minute.
