Real Salt Lake has promoted assistant coach Jeff Cassar to replace Jason Kreis, who stepped down to become coach of the expansion New York City FC.

Cassar, 39, has been with Real Salt Lake since 2007 and was promoted to first assistant in 2011. He will be introduced in a news conference on Thursday.

As goalkeeper coach, Cassar has tutored Nick Rimando, an MLS All-Star in 2010, 2011 and 2013 and a frequent call-up to the U.S. men's national team. Real Salt Lake allowed just 20 goals in 30 regular-season games in 2010.

Since 2012, he has served twice as goalkeeper coach for the national team under Jurgen Klinsmann.

Kreis left RSL just days after the team fell in the MLS Cup championship, losing to Sporting Kansas City on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.
