Major League Soccer and Blackburn have agreed to terms on a transfer for defender George John, clearing a major hurdle in the young centerback’s potential move to the English Premier League.
John is heading to Greece today to secure his passport, the defender's agent, Ted Philipakos, confirmed to FOX Soccer on Monday.
"Getting the passport is a formality," Philipakos said. "He'll have it either Tuesday or Wednesday."
Thanks to Greek grandparents, John is eligible for Greek citizenship, a passport, and will be able to join Blackburn without having to go through the process of acquiring a United Kingdom work permit.
John and Blackburn must still agree on personal terms with John, but MLS and FC Dallas have agreed on an undisclosed transfer fee.
John will not be with FC Dallas when the club takes on Toronto FC in CONCACAF Champions League action in Toronto on Wednesday. John did play in FC Dallas's Champions League win against UNAM Pumas last week, the first win by an MLS team in an official competition in Mexico.
John, 24, has established himself as one of the best central defenders in MLS and caught the eye of Blackburn, which is looking for a replacement for Phil Jones and a potential replacement for Christopher Samba, who could be sold before the end of the current transfer window.
