Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Pablo Mastroeni, who played for the United States at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, is retiring from soccer.

The 37-year-old was a nine-time All-Star in Major League Soccer and is eighth in league history with 316 regular-season games played. He was acquired by the Galaxy in June from Colorado, where he had played since 2002.

Born in Mendoza, Argentina, Mastroeni made 65 appearances for the U.S. from 2001-09. He appeared in three matches at the 2002 World Cup and two at the 2006 tournament.

He announced his retirement on Tuesday.
