San Jose Earthquakes rookie defender Ike Opara will need surgery to repair a broken left foot.

Opara was hurt in Saturday's loss to the Seattle Sounders. The operation is expected either late this week or early next week. The team says there's no timetable for when he might return.

Opara was the No. 3 pick out of Wake Forest in the 2010 SuperDraft. He earned a starting spot out of training camp and has been a key player for the team all season.

Rookie Steven Beitashour is also out after breaking his right hand in practice Monday.
