Cummings goal earns Rapids the win
Omar Cummings scored early in the second half as the Colorado Rapids handed Chivas USA a 1-0 loss Friday night.
The victory was just the third season-opening victory for Colorado and its first on the road.
Chivas lost its season-opener for the first time since 2005, its first season in MLS.
Cummings opened the scoring in what was a tight and uneventful match. In the 55th minute, Colin Clark dribbled down the left side as Chivas defender Mariano Trujillo got in his path and kicked the ball away.
The failed clearance went straight to Cummings, who got the ball with his back to the goal. Cummings ripped a shot and tucked it just inside the right post.
Cummings now has three goals and one assist in his last five games against Chivas at Home Depot Center.
The game featured several debuts on either side. For Chivas, coach Martin Vasquez made his coaching debut, and his first starting lineup featured MLS newcomer Osael Romero, as well as defender Michael Umana, who had a brief spell with Los Angeles in 2005.
Meanwhile, defender Marvell Wynne made his Colorado debut. Wynne was dealt from Toronto FC by Vasquez's predecessor with Chivas, Preki Radosavljevic, to the Rapids in exchange for Nick LaBrocca and a draft pick.
Along with Wynne, Danny Earls, Jeff Larentowicz, Ross LaBauex and Wells Thompson debuted for the Rapids.
