Former All-Star defender Jeff Agoos has been hired by Major League Soccer as technical director of competition.

He will work with Nelson Rodriguez, executive vice president of competition and game operations, on planning and competition strategies.

Agoos is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame who was a five-time MLS champion and nine-time All-Star during a 10-year career with D.C. United, San Jose and New York. He burned his uniform when he failed to make the 1994 U.S. World Cup roster and had an own goal against Portugal in the Americans' opener against Portugal at the 2002 World Cup.

He worked for the Red Bulls as technical director and sporting director after his retirement.
