Dustin Johnson, Kevin Chapell and Hideki Matsuyama came out firing to share the 18-hole lead at the Tour Championship.

Dustin Johnson is on the right track to continuing his winning ways. He’s tied for the lead through 18 holes at the PGA Tour‘s season finale, the Tour Championship.

Continuing to show his distance with the driver, DJ hammered a drive on the par 5 18th hole. Thanks to his length, he managed to hit the green in two — albeit still quite a ways from the hole. He couldn’t charge into sole possession of the lead with an eagle, but he did leave himself a short putt for birdie, which he drained. It was his fifth birdie of the day, capping a four-under 66 that put him in a tie for the top spot through 18 holes.

The other two golfers in that tie are Kevin Chappell and Hideki Matsuyama. They sit at 15th and 17th, respectively, in the FedEx Cup standings, and each has an outside chance of winning the $10 million bonus. However, they need to win the Tour Championship, and they’ll need a ton of help from the top five in points — depending on the composition of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon, any number of things could happen. Although it’s an outside shot, taking the 18-hole lead is good a first step.

Heading into the Tour Championship, the FedEx Cup’s top five golfers controlled their own destinies. Dustin Johnson (1st), Patrick Reed (2nd), Adam Scott (3rd), Jason Day (4th) and Paul Casey (5th) could all clinch the FedEx Cup by simply winning the Tour Championship. After Johnson, Day posted the best round out of the group. Day fired a three-under 67 to finish the day in a tie for fourth with two other golfers, Si-Woo Kim and Kevin Kisner. The next best round came from Casey, who sits in tie for seventh at two-under with four other golfers. Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are the other three in that group; they also carded two-under 68s in the opening round. They sit just two strokes back of the leaders.

As for Scott and Reed, both sit outside of the top 10 after the opening round. Scott sits in a tie for 11th, but still in close range of the leaders. His one-under 69 puts him just three strokes back. Patrick Reed didn’t start off quite as hot; his three-over 73 puts him in a tie for 18th with a seven stroke deficit still to make up.
