PGA Tour golfer hits heartbreaking shot into the water on 18th hole

38-year-old Steve Wheatcroft has never won on the PGA Tour, but he was two shots away from earning himself a spot in the playoff Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open before a nightmare bunker shot handed the win to Jhonattan Vegas.

Vegas went out early and shot the round of the day, carding an 8-under 64 to take the clubhouse lead. With two par-5s in the final three holes at Glen Abbey, every player within a few strokes had a chance to tie or pass Vegas at 12-under for the tournament. Wheatcroft teed off at the 18th one stroke back, and be put his approach shot into a greenside bunker - meaning he had to get up and down for birdie to get into the playoff.

With water behind, Wheatcroft bladed his shot out of a very nasty lie and sent it into the hazard. It was one of the most brutal ways to end a golf tournament, and the commentators were shocked.
