Jose Maria Olazabal says he wants to replace Colin Montgomerie as Europe Ryder Cup captain for the 2012 match in Chicago — provided he is healthy enough to take on the role.

The Spanish player was one of Montgomerie's vice-captains as Europe regained the trophy with a dramatic victory over the United States at Celtic Manor in Wales on Monday. Olazabal was also an assistant to Nick Faldo at Valahalla two years ago.

Olazabal has struggled with rheumatoid arthritis in recent years but says ''there would only be one answer'' if he is healthy and offered the job.

Olazabal, who played in eight Ryder Cups, has been backed by Montgomerie and appears to be the unanimous choice as captain among Europe's victorious players.
