My U.S. Open Moment: Tom Weiskopf
Tom Weiskopf never captured the US Open despite playing some amazing golf in the ‘70s.
The Ohio State star finished a fourth, two thirds and a second during one stretch.
His runnerup effort in 1976 came when Jerry Pate hit a miraculous shot from the right rough after Weiskopf and Al Geiberger had already finished their rounds.
Weiskopf, never finished “one” in the tournament, but he did have two “ones” on his scorecard in Open play.
When they go in, you can’t believe it yourself,” Weiskopf said of his ace at Cherry Hills. “You’re just elated.”
The second hole-in-one came while he was playing with the great Jack Nicklaus.
After the shot found the cup, Nicklaus said to his fellow Buckeye, “Great shot.” Weiskopf replied, “Just lucky, can’t wait for the next one.”
