McIlroy to return to Players

It’s no secret that Rory McIlroy is planning to rejoin the PGA Tour in 2012. The big unknown surrounding the reigning US Open champion has been where he will play.

In discussions with his management group at ISM, McIlroy, 22, of Northern Ireland, is making some changes that will not make everybody happy, but they should work best next year for the person in this who matters most: Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy will swap one iconic golf figure’s tournament for another’s next year, adding the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March in Orlando, Fla., and dropping Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament in May. McIlroy also plans to add The Players Championship after having missed the event this year.

If he qualifies for all four FedEx Cup playoff tournaments next year, McIlroy will play in 15 PGA Tour events, the minimum for membership.
