Shigeki Maruyama had another 5-under 65 on Saturday in the Sony Open to build a two-shot lead among the early finishers as he prepares for a marathon finish.
Maruyama loves playing Waialae because there isn't a premium on length. He holed a bunker shot on the par-3 seventh, and finished his round two holes later with a two-putt birdie on the easy par-5 ninth.
He was at 10-under 130, two shots ahead of Steve Marino and Roland Thatcher.
Matt Kuchar, coming off a strong year in which he won the PGA Tour money title and the Vardon Trophy, had a 68 and was very much in the mix going into the final day. Because of rain earlier in the week, 36 holes are scheduled for Sunday.
