Martin Kaymer lands drive in cart path, still makes ridiculous birdie

Published Mar. 24, 2016 10:47 a.m. ET

Martin Kaymer beat Shane Lowry on Wednesday in his opening match at the WGC-Dell Match Play, and this sensational birdie at the par-5 16th hole is what swung the match.

With Lowry 1-up through 15 holes, Kaymer hit an awful drive that landed perfectly in the middle of a cart path just 232 yards from the tee. Undeterred, Kaymer boomed an iron off the path that traveled nearly as far as his drive, then hit one of the best approach shots of the day.

The tap-in birdie won the hole and squared the match, and Kaymer quickly took the lead with a birdie at 17.
