Members of England's male and female amateur golf associations have agreed to merge into a single governing body.

The male-run English Golf Union and the English Women's Golf Association say the unified organization ''will help us to grow the game and will be more appealing to commercial partners and sponsors and will mean we can be more cost effective.''

The new body is set to be called England Golf and begin Jan. 1 with its first president being a woman.
