South Africa's James Kingston hit a 5-under 65 to lead after the first round of the Mallorca Open on Thursday.

Kingston carded six birdies against one bogey at the 6,915-yard (6,325-meter) Pula Golf Club and lay two strokes ahead of Spain's Alvaro Velasco, who scored 67.

``It was actually an easy round,'' said Kingston, a two-time European Tour winner.

Velasco, who notched five birdies, was happy, too.

``It was a good round,'' the Barcelona resident said. ``I played very well, particularly the back nine.''

Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen, Frances's Raphael Jacquelin, Irishman Gary Murphy and Spain's Alejandro Canizares followed, each with 68s.
