Jeev Milkha Singh of India upstaged Ireland's major winners, shooting an 8-under 63 for a three-shot clubhouse lead Thursday in the first round of the Irish Open.

More than 20,000 fans were on hand to watch homegrown stars led by British Open winner Darren Clarke and US Open champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.

But it was Singh who demonstrated the best command of the greens at Killarney, a resort town set against a stunning mountain backdrop.

McIlroy jumped out to an early lead of 4-under after the first 10 holes, but his game grew erratic and he took a double-bogey on the 18th to finish at 1-under 70.

Clarke shook off tiredness and a first-hole bogey to finish at 2-under 69.
