J.B. Holmes won't return to PGA Tour play this season in the wake of a broken ankle in March, he announced Tuesday morning.
Holmes said via two posts on his Twitter account:
Holmes originally was expected to miss 8-10 weeks because of the accident, suffered not far from his Windermere, Fla., home near Orlando. Holmes was rollerblading backward while training when he hit a hole and fell during the week of the nearby Arnold Palmer Invitational. "Just a freak little thing," a public-relations official said at the time.
Holmes, who went to college in his home state of Kentucky, had made one cut this season before the accident, finishing tied for 50th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-am. He won $1,179,505 in 2012, with two career PGA Tour wins before that.
That million-dollar season proved that Holmes can recover from challenges much bigger than a broken ankle – it came on the heels of brain surgery in 2011, when his season was cut short by vertigo-like symptoms and he had an operation to repair Chiari malformations.
He told Golfweek columnist Jeff Rude at the time, in discussing his rehab from the surgery: "I’m anxious to see if I’ll be a little more calm and easier on myself. I’m excited and really looking forward to getting back. I think it will be a big difference for me, so I’m very optimistic about the upcoming year."
That proved prophetic, indeed.
Since the ankle injury, Holmes has kept his spirits up, it would seem – getting married in the meantime, celebrating a birthday and even making a little fun of his injury perhaps when he tweeted a picture of himself next to a giant skate:
