Hunter Mahan used a 5-iron to make a hole-in-one on Conway Farms’ 210-yard 17th hole in the BMW Championship third round Saturday. And it was no ordinary ace for reasons beyond the fact his ball got a good bounce off of a mound.

It not only won Mahan a new electric BMW car, it meant that BMW will contribute $100,000 to the tournament’s charitable arm, the Evans Scholars Foundation, which sends country club caddies to college.

“That’s amazing,” Mahan said of the scholarship part. “That’s awesome of BMW to do that. I remember playing the Western Junior and hearing about it, and it’s a great thing that they do. It’s awesome that a kid is going to have a great education."

Mahan shot 65 Saturday and moved into contention. He was tied for sixth after finishing, with most leaders still in the middle of the back nine.

The BMW i3 that Mahan won is like the one Rory McIlroy and Gary Woodland drove recently.
