Scottish golfer Richie Ramsay failed to qualify for this year's US Open after his gamble to attend a friend's wedding and return in time for a playoff spectacularly backfired at the BMW PGA Championship in Surrey, England on Monday, according to Sky Sports.

The trio of Ramsay, Swede Johan Edfors and Dane Andreas Harto were set to decide the last of the 11 US Open spots on offer but Ramsay had already left the course to catch a plane to Belfast to attend the wedding reception of fellow professional Gareth Maybin.

A fog delay meant play started three and a half hours late Monday, and rain also fell for much of the day.

Ramsay was convinced fading light would mean the playoff would have not been possible until Tuesday, so he took off for the wedding.

He missed his flight but arrived back at the course to find the playoff had started at 9:15 p.m. and he was too late to take his place.

"It's just been an horrific day — an awful, awful day," Ramsay said.

"As I left it was 5:30 p.m. and guys were teeing off the first. I actually feel physically sick — I can't believe they played when it was pitch dark."
