PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) Sergio Garcia made an eagle, avoided an alligator and wound up in a share of the lead Thursday in the Honda Classic.

Garcia holed out an 8-iron for eagle on the second hole and finished with a birdie for a 5-under 65. Michael Thompson, who won the Honda Classic in 2013, also made birdie on the 18th for a 65.

They were one shot ahead of Rickie Fowler and William McGirt.

Garcia's big day included a bogey on No. 6 after his tee shot bounced into the water. He rolled up his pants to play the shot, but not before looking over his shoulder at a gator on the island.

Garcia and the golf ball made it out just fine.

The day didn't end so well for Rory McIlroy. He three-putted from 10 feet for bogey on the 18th and slammed his putter on the concrete outside the scoring area before signing for a 72.
