Donald Trump is bullish on golf. Having bought Doral Resort & Spa near Miami last year, the worldly real estate impresario is now teaming with World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Faldo on a redesign of 36 holes at the legendary five-course property.
Trump has hired Faldo to rework two courses at Doral. Detailed plans have yet to be determined for the Red Course (6,101 yards, par 70) and the Gold Course (6,639 yards, par 70).
Substantial rerouting of the hole corridors is not possible because the two layouts occupy a parcel adjoining Doral’s famed Blue Monster, site of the annual World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship, and are encumbered by real estate and resort development. The course work will, however, constitute a significant revision involving lengthening, aesthetics and playing strategy.
Faldo’s work on the Red and Gold courses will not begin until March 2014, following completion of major renovations to the Blue Monster by Gil Hanse. That work is slated to start March 11, the day after the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
No plans have been announced for Doral’s two other 18-hole layouts, the Jim McLean Signature Course and the Greg Norman-designed Great White Course.
