Deutsche Bank Championship: Kevin Chappell Seizes 36-Hole Lead
Kevin Chappell came out firing in the second round to take the top spot at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Kevin Chappell had just one blemish on his second round score card, that came with a bogey on the par four 13th. The U.S. native carded six birdies and an eagle to score a seven-under 63. His course low on the day rocketed him up six spots on the leader board. He now sits at 11-under for the tournament with just a one stroke lead.
Right on his tail is Englishman Paul Casey who came into the clubhouse with a five-under 66, matching his score from yesterday’s first round. He sits in a tie for second with 2016 PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker. Brian Harmon sits alone in third place with a nine-under tournament score that leaves him just two strokes off the leading pace.
Sitting just one stroke behind Harmon are two familiar faces in Smylie Kaufman and Dustin Johnson. Smylie started his round at an incredible pace, throwing down red numbers on the first five holes of the day.
That included four birdies and an eagle before he finally broke pace with a par on the six hole. After another birdie on the seventh, it look as though he was destined for a course low on the day but it wasn’t the case. He bogeyed the final two holes on the front before adding just one bogey and one birdie on the back. He finished the day with a five-under 66.
2016 U.S. Open Champion Dustin Johnson also shot a solid five-under 66 but gave a away a few strokes on the final hole. Johnson threw down a seven on the par five 18th hole to give back two strokes.
Last week’s champion at The Barclays and current FedEx Cup leader Patrick Reed shot a four-under 67 to remain in contention. He sits in a tie for seventh with five other golfers all holding a tournament score of seven-under. Names in that group include Brian Stuard, Daniel Berger, Ryan Moore, Gary Woodland, and Justin Rose.
Other notables such as Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Henrik Stenson all remain in striking distance. Spieth sits with nine other golfers in a tie for 13th at six-under while Johnson Mcllroy, and Stenson are tied for 30th with 13 other golfers with a tournament score of four-under.
