Casey won't rejoin European Tour, ineligible for Ryder Cup

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:13 p.m. ET

VIRGINIA WATER, England -- English golfer Paul Casey has opted not to rejoin the European Tour for next season, meaning he will be ineligible for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota.

Casey, who is based mainly in Arizona, gave up his membership after deciding to concentrate on the PGA Tour in order to get back into the world's top 50.

The former No. 3-ranked Casey has climbed from No. 75 in the rankings at the end of last season to his current position of No. 24, but even this week's change in membership criteria has not been enough to persuade him to rejoin.

Casey says in a statement released to Britain's Press Association Sport that "with my wife and young son as my priority, I have decided to continue to concentrate on the PGA Tour which has worked well for us this past year."

Casey played in Europe's Ryder Cup wins in 2004 and 2006, and the 2008 loss at Valhalla.

The 2016 Ryder Cup starts Sept. 27.
