COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Carlos Ortiz of Mexico found his game at just the right time Monday and qualified for his first major at the U.S. Open.
Ortiz had made only two cuts in the past three months on the PGA Tour. In the strongest qualifying field of mainly tour players, the 25-year-old from Mexico shot 66-66 on different courses in Columbus to lead 13 qualifiers in Ohio.
The other spots from Ohio were still being determined because of a rain delay. In the other Ohio qualifier where only four spots were available, Illinois teammates Nick Hardy and Charlie Danielson each qualified for the U.S. Open at Oakmont next week.
In a Tennessee qualifier with tour players, 49-year-old David Toms made it to his 19th U.S. Open.
