COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) USA Cycling has hired Steve Blank to lead its foundation, which is responsible for raising money from private donors to help fund national and Olympic teams and other endeavors.

Blank had spent the past 12 years with the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental non-profit based in Southern California. He's also been involved with EarthShare, which supports conservation charities.

The foundation was created to raise money for year-round support of athlete training, development, competition and travel needs. Unlike rival nations such as Great Britain, cycling's U.S. governing body only receives a modest amount of government support.

Blank will be charged with not only filling the gap, but also raising money to help in USA Cycling's renewed emphasis on grassroots development and the expansion of its amateur programs.
