Landa wins 2nd stage of Basque Country to take lead
BARANBIO, Spain (AP) Mikel Landa of Spain took the lead of the Tour of Basque Country after winning its mountainous second stage on Tuesday.
Landa broke away from the leading pack along with Wilco Kelderman on the final uphill climb before pulling away from the Dutchman to claim the 174-kilometer (108-mile) ride from Markina to Baranbio.
Landa, who is from the northern Basque Country region, finished the stage in four hours, 43 minutes and 17 seconds to take the leader's jersey from Luis Sanchez.
It was his seventh career win and his first since joining Sky this season.
Alberto Contador crossed the finish line fifth and trails Landa by 11 seconds. Rival contender Nairo Quintana and defending champion Joaquim Rodriguez are 15 seconds back while Fabio Aru fell 22 seconds off the pace.
Wednesday's third stage is a mountainous 193-kilometer ride from Vitoria to Lesaka.
The six-day race in northern Spain ends with a time trial around Eibar on Saturday.
