AIGLE, Switzerland (AP) The International Cycling Union says Italian rider Giampaolo Caruso has tested positive for EPO in new testing of a sample given in March 2012.

The UCI says the sample ''had been stored and was reanalyzed in light of new scientific developments.''

The UCI and Caruso's team Katusha say he is provisionally suspended during his disciplinary case.

Caruso had been named in the Russian team's lineup for the three-week Spanish Vuelta which starts Saturday.

The 35-year-old rider previously served a six-month ban after testing positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone in 2003.

Caruso is in his sixth season riding for Katusha, and won the Milan-Turin one-day race last year.

The team says in a statement that ''this news comes as a complete shock.''
