WVU freshman Durante set to start at WR
Jovon Durante is a rarity at West Virginia, coach Dana Holgorsen said Tuesday. Durante is among a select group of freshmen receivers under Holgorsen to open the season in the starting lineup.
The Mountaineers play host to Georgia Southern on Saturday night.
“A bunch of people are making a big deal about him being a starter, and I am proud of him,” Holgorsen said. “He has made some pretty good plays, and he has bundles of potential.
“We started plenty of true freshmen around here. I don't know how many of them have been at wideout.”
On the current roster, junior receiver Daikiel Shorts started nine games as a true freshman.
According to receivers coach Lonnie Galloway, Durante earned the start because he doesn't play like a freshman.
“He's a tremendous talent as far as his hand-eye coordination,” Galloway said. “His ball skills are unbelievable to be a freshman. That's why he was rated so high.”
