Wayne State football coach Paul Winters is withdrawing from consideration for the Akron job and has signed an extension to stay with the Warriors through the 2016 season.

Winters led Wayne State to the Division II national championship game, but the Warriors lost to Pittsburg State last weekend.

Winters says he's excited about what Wayne State has accomplished and about the future.

Athletic director Rob Fournier says he's ''ecstatic'' that Winters is staying.
