Virginia's Eli Harold slips to the third round, Anthony Harris goes undrafted
The first two rounds came and went without Eli Harold's name getting called. The former Virginia defensive end had some first-round hype, so the fact that Harold wasn't selected until the third round by the San Francisco 49ers was somewhat surprising.
"I’ve heard some first-round buzz, but I’ve heard more second round," Harold told Andrew Ramspacher of The Daily Progress before the draft.
"I’m surprised he lasted that long," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said, per Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Harold was a productive pass-rusher with the Cavaliers, and now his former partner in crime, Max Valles, will go to work nearby. Valles was a sixth-round pick by the Oakland Raiders, as both draftees ended up in California.
A bigger shock than Harold's slide was Anthony Harris' going unselected. Although a recent shoulder surgery kept him from working out fully for NFL suitors, Harris was a team captain last season and led the NCAA in interceptions in 2013. He was signed after the draft by the Minnesota Vikings, the official Virginia football Twitter account announced.
Harris entered the draft after playing out his entire collegiate eligibility at Virginia. Harold and Valles, however, were early entrants. Harold left a year of eligibility on the table; Valles left two.
