USC's Clay Helton interim era is eerily similar to the Ed Orgeron era
Clay Helton has performed well as USC's interim head coach, reminding many of former interim head coach Ed Orgeron's experience with the Trojans.
In a recent post from FanSided, one Reign of Troy writer looks at all of the strange similarities from the two coaches. There are a variety of reasons listed, including: Both coaches took over 3-2 teams, both coaches lost mid-October at Notre Dame and both coaches defeated a team ranked Top 5. Orgeron beat No. 5 Stanford; Helton beat No. 3 Utah.
Reign of Troy also notes key October injuries (Oregeron lost Morgan Breslin, Lamar Dawson and Justin Davis while Helton has lost Max Tuerk and Toa Lobendahn) and similarly strong receivers. Ed Orgeron had Marqise Lee; Helton has Smith-Schuster.
Additionally, Orgeron had running back Buck Allen emerge in 2013; Helton has seen the rise of Ronald Jones II. Perhaps the weirdest similarity? Orgeron's USC won 38-31; Helton won 38-30.
