Urban Meyer Praises Leadership Of Players

Urban Meyer relies on his team leaders.
In his weekly call in show Urban Meyer had praise for the leadership of two of his current players and two who have moved on to the NFL. He praised J.T. Barrett, Raekwon McMillan for the progress the Buckeyes have made entering this season, as well as Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell being great leaders in the past as well.
Here are comments by coach Urban Meyer as reported in an Eleven Warriors article. The first is a question about the captains essentially being coaches on the field.
‘You want to be a great team? Solve the problems on the field.'”
“We’re dead in the water without [J.T. Barrett] and [Raekwon McMillan].” If OSU were forced to play in January without them, we would’ve witnessed “the worst season in the history of Ohio State football.”
When the coach was asked about Malik Hooker almost leaving the program his freshman season he had this to say about the situation.
“His unit leaders were Tyvis Powell and Vonn Bell. You think he was about to leave the program?”
The coach had a few things to say about the defense. He said he was pleased with the tackling against Bowling Green. When asked about playing so many players on defense, Urban replied that in today’s college football you will only have good players for three or four years so you might as well play them.
Urban Meyer also said Ohio State will use different looks on defense Saturday because it will be a chess game with Tulsa’s versatile offense. The coach had praise for Tulsa’s sophomore running back DeAngelo Brewer. He also said that Nick Bosa will be used a little more and it appears linebacker Donte Booker is questionable for Saturday’s game..
On offense Urban said he was pleased by the rotation of Mike Weber, Curtis Samuel and Dontre Wilson. He said the play calling was very good as well. Also, that Corey Smith and Noah Brown aren’t completely healthy at the moment.

But he commented that the coaches were as excited as the players when Brown caught the touchdown pass against Bowling green.
When asked the prospects of running back demario McCall seeing more playing time, the coach said he needs to get stronger. Urban said that former Ohio State defensive coordinator Bill Young has a strong defense but said it was “standard” and the offensive coaches know what to expect from them.
That last comment would give me cause for concern if I was on the defensive side of the ball for Tulsa. Ohio State has some of the best offensive talent in college football and they dropped 77 points on Bowling Green in the first game of the season.
And now coach Urban Meyer says he knows what to expect from Tulsa on defense. Let’s hope the scoreboard doesn’t explode Saturday.
