UNC Football: Switzer, Weiler earn ACC honors
UNC continues its streak of players getting ACC honors after upsetting the Florida State Seminoles
Another week and more UNC players have earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
It’s almost becoming a tradition as it marks the fourth-straight week a Tar Heels football player has earned the honor from the ACC. This week it’s two players who had a huge role in UNC’s upset win over Florida State.
Let’s start with the receiver.
For the second-straight week, Ryan Switzer has been named the ACC Player of the Week for the receiver position. Against Pittsburgh, Switzer turned in a career day with 16 receptions for 208 yards as he helped the Tar Heels come back against Pitt.
He followed it up with a 14 reception, 158 yard performance in the upset win over the Seminoles on Saturday. Switzer is on pace to reach 100-plus receptions this year and has been a big key to UNC’s offensive success.
Via the ACC:
Switzer made 14 receptions for 158 yards in the 37-35 win at No. 12 Florida State. He has 30 catches over the last two weeks (16 last week vs. Pitt), which is an ACC record for most receptions in back-to-back games. It was his third consecutive game with more than 100 yards receiving and marked the eighth time he topped the century mark in his career.
Then there was the man of the day.
Tar Heels kicker Nick Weiler connected on a 54-yard field goal with no time left to help lead the Tar Heels to the 37-35 win on Saturday. The kick was the longest in his career and the second-longest in school history.
For Weiler’s efforts, he earns his first ACC Player of the Week award in the 2016 season as a Specialist.
Here’s what the ACC had to say:
Weiler’s 54-yard field goal equaled the second-longest in UNC history and gave the Tar Heels a win over their highest ranked opponent since knocking off No. 12 Miami in 2009. It marked the highest ranked team North Carolina had beaten on the road since a win at No. 9 Syracuse in 1996.
The Tar Heels will host the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday in another big Coastal Division game at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
The winner takes control of the division and is in good position to go to the conference championship game in December.
Keeping It Heel will have full coverage during the week leading up to the game.
