SWAC staggers suspensions for postgame fight
The Southwestern Athletic Conference is staggering suspensions from the postgame fight between Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The SWAC says the 40 suspended players will be allowed to serve their one- and two-game suspensions over the next three games. The league also reinstated Southern's Corry Roy after determining he wasn't involved in the fight.
Southern had 15 suspensions, three for two games. Five of Pine Bluff's 25 suspensions were for two games.
SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said the league considered the safety of the remaining players and the possibility that the teams might have to play a freshman in line for a redshirt season.
Southern plays Alcorn State Saturday, followed by visits to Texas Southern and Alabama State. Pine Bluff hosts Grambling and Alabama State and then visits Mississippi Valley State.
