Stoops in full support of move to provide athletes more money
Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops firmly believes that supplying athletes with additional scholarship funds is the right thing to do.
"It’s a trend that’s in the right direction for our student-athletes and I’m excited about it," Stoops recently told The Oklahoman.
As the Power 5 conferences have gained greater autonomy to make changes to how they do business, they passed a measure to provide full cost of attendance scholarships. The extra funds are designed to bridge the gap between the value of their scholarships and the actual costs to attend school.
According to The Oklahoman, The Chronicle of Higher Education estimates that Oklahoma will be able to provide an additional $4,614 under the new rules. The extra money is expected to be used for things like travel, medical insurance and other miscellaneous expenses.
Out-of-state student-athletes could receive more money that in-state students, depending on how schools calculate costs. The idea is to help out-of-state athletes travel home and back.
"Obviously most of our recruiting is out-of-state, primarily,” Stoops said. "The cost of attendance should only help us with the ability to pay for some travel back and forth. I think it’s all positive."
