Stoops has big decision to make at QB to lift Air Raid, Sooners
Since the days of Sam Bradford, Oklahoma fans just haven't been very happy with the performances of Sooners quarterbacks.
Landry Jones held onto the job for quite some time, but he never quickened the pulse of the Sooner faithful and was largely underappreciated for the success he had over the better part of four seasons.
Landry's successor, Blake Bell, eventually transitioned to tight end to make way for Trevor Knight, whose Sugar Bowl sweetness following the 2013 season didn't translate into the envisioned success in 2014.
And now Knight might be out.
If he is, the question is who gets the ball as Oklahoma re-installs the Air Raid offense under new offensive coordinator and Mike Leach disciple Lincoln Riley?
Knight is trying to hold onto the job, but will have to hold off Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield, who is well-versed in the Air Raid from his short stint playing under Red Raiders coach and former quarterback Kliff Kingsbury. Because of that experience and how well he played as a walk-on starter at Tech two seasons ago, Mayfield has emerged as the likely frontrunner heading into fall camp.
Last season's backup Cody Thomas got a brief opportunity to make a first impression after Knight was injured late in the season, but failed to put a firm grip on the position.
Redshirt freshman Justice Hansen has a great name for a quarterback and hails from nearby Edmond, Okla., but at this point he seems like a long shot in this race.
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops certainly has a difficult decision on his hands entering a pivotal season in his long career at OU. Fans are becoming increasingly impatient with seeing Baylor and TCU taking over as the Big 12's heavyweights while OU flails.
