South Carolina and Spurrier trying to avoid dubious distinction

South Carolina's football program under Steve Spurrier is in a bit of turmoil at the moment.

The Gamecocks are sitting at 2-3, and winless in conference play (0-3). Heading to Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend is a talented LSU team. Tigers' running back Leonard Fournette is averaging 216 yards a game on the ground, and is a virtual one-man wrecking crew.

The current state of the South Carolina program is shaky at best. South Carolina is 0-3 in the conference for the first time since 2005. A loss against LSU would put the Gamecocks at 0-4 in SEC play. This hasn't occurred since the 1999 season, in which a Lou Holtz-led team finished 0-11.

A defeat in this contest would leave South Carolina at 2-4, with games against Florida, Texas A&M, Clemson, and Tennessee remaining.

In order to avoid Spurrier's first losing season at South Carolina, the Gamecocks needs to play with a 'back-against-the-wall-mentality' in this contest.
