Source: Long-time TCU defensive coordinator Bumpas retiring
Long-time TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas is retiring, a source told FOX Sports.
The 65-year-old Bumpas spent 11 seasons at TCU and helped turn the Horned Frogs into one of the best defensive teams in the country on a consistent basis while working with Gary Patterson, one of the more hands-on head coaches in college football. Bumpas' defense ranked No. 1 in scoring and total defense in the Big 12 in 2014 as TCU went 12-1 and finished No. 3 in the final AP poll.
Bumpas was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award, honoring the nation's top assistant, in 2008, 2009 and 2010. TCU led the nation in total defense each of those three years.
Patterson and Bumpas had actually worked together at five different schools, dating back to K-State in the early 1980s.
No word yet on his successor.
