SEC Football: Alabama Overwhelms LSU in Death Valley

The Texas A&M football team fell to Mississippi State on the road Saturday, but they weren’t the only road favorite to fall in a wild weekend of SEC football.

Georgia Southern – 27 at Ole Miss – 37

Georgia Southern had a 21-10 lead in the second quarter after three touchdown runs, including a 68 yard scamper by running back Matt Breida. Ole Miss regrouped and scored 21 unanswered points before the half time whistle to take a 31-21 lead. The teams traded field goals in the third and fourth quarter, but that second quarter rally would prove to be enough for the Rebels.

Ole Miss is now 4-5 (1-4 SEC) and travels to College Station next weekend to take on Texas A&M.

Vanderbilt – 16 at No. 9 Auburn – 23

The Commodores were able to control the clock for the better part of the first half, including a 13 play, 57 yard drive to set up a go ahead field goal at the end of the first half. After that it was all Auburn.

The Vanderbilt defense blocked what would have been the game clinched field goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game, keeping them within one score of the Tigers. Setting up Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur with the opportunity for game-tying drive. That final drive would end in an interception by Joshua Holsey at the Auburn 18 yard line as the Tigers were able to outlast Vandy at home.

Auburn improves to 7-2 (5-1 SEC) and hosts Georgia next. Vanderbilt falls to 4-5 (1-4 SEC) and will play their next game on the road against Missouri.

No. 11 Florida – 10 at Arkansas – 31

Texas A&M wasn’t the only highly ranked SEC team to go down on the road this weekend. Arkansas controlled this game from the opening whistle, gaining 272 yards in the first half while holding the Gators to 104 yards before the break.

Florida was just 1-11 on third down and Arkansas dominated the time of possession with just under 39 minutes of the game. Rawleigh Williams would put the game away with a 41 yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

Florida is now 6-2 (4-2 SEC) and has a home game up next against the Gamecocks of South Carolina. The Razorbacks edge their record to 6-3 (2-3) and will host LSU fresh off their showdown with Alabama.

Missouri – 21 at South Carolina – 31

A back and forth battle for the bottom rung in the SEC East was won (or lost depending on your perspective) by South Carolina. Freshman quarterback Jake Bentley (254 yards, 2 TDs) is now 3-0 under held of the Gamecocks.

South Carolina improves to 5-4 (3-4 SEC) and has a road trip to the Swamp to take on Florida next on the schedule. The Tigers of Missouri are the first SEC team eliminated from bowl contention at 2-7 (0-5 SEC). They’ll try again for their first SEC win at home next week against Vanderbilt.

Tennessee Tech – 0 at Tennessee – 55

Tennessee scored 21 points in the first quarter, 17 points in the second quarter, and coasted for the rest of the game. After three consecutive losses to Texas A&M, Alabama, and South Carolina the Volunteers needed a stabilizing win to right the ship. A 55-0 shutout at home ought to do the trick.

Tennessee 6-3 (2-3 SEC) will hosts Kentucky next week in what will become a huge game in deciding the winner of the SEC East.

Georgia – 27 at Kentucky – 24

After Florida fell on the road earlier in the afternoon they left Kentucky in the drivers seat for lead in the SEC East. All they had to do was beat a 4-4 Georgia team. Kentucky was able to string together just enough plays to take a 21-13 lead at the beginning of the third quarter, courtesy of another Benny Snell touchdown run.

Late in the game, Jacob Eason was able to bring Georgia within field goal range, leaving the game on the leg of redshirt freshman Rodrigo Blankenship (he has his own website, we’re not kidding). Blakenship drilled the 25 yard attempt with time expiring to give the Bulldogs the victory on the road.

Georgia is now 5-4 (3-4 SEC) and will welcome the Auburn Tigers to Athens next week. Kentucky falls to 5-4 (4-3 SEC) and will travel to Tennessee.

No. 1 Alabama – 10 at No. 13 LSU – 0

A 21 yard Jalen Hurts touchdown run at the beginning of the fourth quarter was the difference maker in a low scoring, SEC slug fest. The touchdown run was complete with a missed holding call that prevented LSU end Arden Key from getting to the quarterback. The Crimson Tide don’t need any help, but they keep getting it.

LSU managed 125 yards of offensive against Alabama. 3.8 yards per pass attempt and 1.2 yards per carry. After a Jalen Hurts interception on the first drive of the game, LSU would take over at the Alabama 33 yard line and miss a field goal. That was as close as they would get to scoring for the rest of the game.

Alabama remains undefeated, now 9-0 (6-0 SEC) and hosts Mississippi State next weekend. LSU drops to 5-3 (3-2 SEC) and will hit the road to play the Arkansas Razorbacks.
